The NDIS Amendment (Securing the NDIS for Future Generations) Bill 2026 has passed Parliament

The Australian Parliament has passed the NDIS Amendment (Securing the NDIS for Future Generations) Bill 2026. The Bill is an important step to strengthen the NDIS and ensure it can continue to support people with permanent and significant disability into the future. The changes will make it clearer who can access the NDIS, how NDIS plans are managed, and how NDIS funding can be used. The Bill also strengthens oversight of providers delivering NDIS-funded supports. The legislation was informed by feedback from people with disability, families, carers, advocates, providers and the broader disability community, including through the Senate inquiry process. The Australian Government agreed to amendments to the Bill in response to community feedback. These amendments strengthen safeguards for participants and the integrity of the NDIS, make the legislation easier to understand, and support new arrangements for plan management providers. The Government also agreed amendments to the Bill to safeguard high support needs participants who require continuous 24-hour care. Together, these changes will help make the NDIS stronger, fairer and more sustainable, while keeping its focus on the people it was designed to support. Most participants and providers will not see any immediate changes and do not need to do anything differently now. Current NDIS access and planning arrangements will stay the same while changes are introduced over the coming years. There will be no changes to NDIS access arrangements before 1 January 2028. The National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) will let participants know before any changes affect them. The Australian Government is continuing to consult with people with disability, families, carers, providers, advocates and the broader community on reforms that support the future of the NDIS.
